Michigan FAQ

Who is required to have a Michigan CDL?

Those required to obtain a CDL are Michigan residents who will be driving any of the following:

  • Vehicles exceeding 26,000 pounds in weight.

  • Vehicles used to transport more than 16 individuals.

  • Vehicles transporting any form of hazardous materials, no matter the weight of the vehicle.

This refers only to commercial vehicles; individuals driving motor homes or similar vehicles for personal use are not required to obtain a CDL.

What are things that I should consider when selecting a Michigan truck driving school?
There are a number of different things you should consider when it comes to choosing the best truck driving school for you. Find out how much classroom training there is and how many hours of actual driving training there is. Keep in mind that the state of Michigan has no set requirements for behind-the-wheel training, so the more driving training offered, the more prepared you will be. Find out if all the driving is done at a closed facility or if there is over-the-road training as well.

In addition, you should take into consideration the tuition costs of each school. Many schools offer financial aid programs and payment plans to help students pay for the training. Find a school that offers a plan or program that works with your current financial situation.

What does the Michigan CDL test entail?
When applying for a new Michigan CDL, you will be required to take both knowledge tests and skills test. The knowledge tests are written while the skills exams test your driving capabilities and ability to safely operate a commercial vehicle.

What are the age qualifications to become a truck driver?
To drive within the state of Michigan, you must be at least 18 years old. To drive across state lines, you must be at least 21 years old.

Are there any physical qualifications?
Before taking any CDL tests, you will be required to provide a current and valid medical examiner certificate which states you are physically capable of operating a commercial vehicle. The truck driving school you decide to attend can provide further information about obtaining the certificate.

Where do I apply for the CDL?
You must first go to nearest Secretary of State branch office and show proof of your social security number. You must also complete a CDL testing application which certifies that you meet all medical and truck driving qualifications.

The CDL knowledge and skills tests are administered at your local DMV or a state-approved testing center.
